The Park is located 25 milles (40 km) north from Panama city.

Chagres National Park was established en 1984 and extends for 320,248 acres (129,600 Ha.) between the provinces of Panama and Colon. The Park is 70% Government of Panama ownership, with the remaining 30% privately owned.

The Park protects the watershed of the Chagres River, the most important river en Panama and from where the Park gets is name. Forty percent of the water needed to operate the Panama Canal comes from the Chagres National Park. In addition, the municipal and industrial water for the city of Colon and Panama, as well as electricity for these major urban areas, also comes from the Chagres Rivers watershed. Without the protection the National Park gives to the Chagres river, the functioning of the Canal would not be possible. The Chagres, because of the merging with the Panama Canal, is the only river in the world that flows into two oceans.
